Buenos Aires producer/dj Adrian Hour supplies the latest edition of the When We Dip podcast. The Argentinian has been the youthful driving power behind Toolroom Records in recent years aligning with the old guard as one of the central talents pushing forward the UK imprint. This week, he delivers an exclusive sixty minute recording and runs us through his new EP on the label.
WWD: Hi Adrian, thanks for taking the time to chat! You’ve had a very busy schedule over the last two months, that includes a trip to BPM, have things settled down yet?
Yes fortunately I have had a busy schedule over the last couple of months! Things have just about settled down now… After my trip to BPM I went back to Argentina for some gigs and I visited my family too. I always make time to see my family and friends. Now I’m back in Berlin to start again with some studio productions, gigs and prepping for the summer!
WWD: You’ve just released your “Love Something / Don’t Stop EP on Toolroom. Can you tell us the story behind it?
The story behind the EP is my mixture of feelings while I was traveling to different parts of the world. I thought it would be good to make something melodic – Something really passionate and that’s how the EP, got it’s name, ‘Love Something’. I’ve been playing this one since last year and it always worked so well on the dance floor… Some of my friends came to me more than once singing the melody and that was perfect because then I knew it worked. “Don’t Stop ” is the younger brother to ” Like This” I tried to make something with that kind of energy for my sets – Trying to keep the house vibe with classic samples and the power with a fat kick and bass line.
WWD: This is a topic that intrigues us at the moment – the lasting value of a track or a composition in electronic music seems to be diminishing by the second in terms of listener consumption. How do you view this situation?
I think the music, like everything in this world is changing all the time. And for me, the changes aren’t negative at all, although it seems to be something bad in that moment. I see this as part of the evolution!
WWD: Is there any solution to reverse the process or for re-creating that value in the eyes of the end listener?
I think there is always a solution, but to be honest I think the art in general should be free for everyone in this world. Maybe we should find another way to reward the artists.
WWD: Does this issue impact on how often you decide to release as a producer?
It doesn’t impact on how often I decide to release music. I just make music and if I think it should be released it is.
You’ve kindly put a mix together for us, can you tell us a little bit about your approach and what we can find in there?
I listen lots of different artists when I’m traveling, everything from the likes of Weval, Ame, Dixon, some Disco music, to Downtempo. Sometimes I just make mix for me, I select and buy all different Electronica tracks – Sometimes I will never post them. I just loving doing them. In this mix I made for you guys you can find my latest tracks I play in my gigs, a mixture of house, Techno and some melodic tracks that I love. You will find my two tracks recently released on Toolroom, “Love Something” & “Don’t Stop”.
WWD: Lastly. what are the big dates on the horizon for you? What can we expect from you in the coming months?
I bet this year will be stronger than last year, this weekend we have the Toolroom party in Liverpool, I play alongside Mark Knight and Dosem. Then I head to Bilbao (Spain), Tampa, (US), then a mini Asia tour, then moving straight into Miami Music Week. On top of touring, I have lots of new music coming up and there will be LOTS of time spent in the studio.
