London based producer Unorthodox presents a powerhouse techno treat today in the form of Printclocks, a dynamic effort that showcases his growing prowess in the studio. It’s been an exciting few months for Unorthodox with regular appearances in the foremost venues of the UK as well as a recent release alongside Paul Ursin on Pirupa’s Non Stop label. This Saturday he makes his way to the hallowed ground of Ministry of Sound for what will undoubtedly be another notch on his growing belt of landmark clubs. We caught up with the man himself to get the lowdown on the fantastic free download he’s given us to release today and on the future plans for his Unorthodox project.

1) Great to have you in the When We Dip hotseat this week with a stomping new track in the form of Printclocks, can you give us the lowdown on this melodic monster?
Whenever I make music, it usually reflects my current mood. In this track for example, it has quite a serious melancholy approach but diverts adding a progressive uplifting element. I like to look at my records as light versus dark I guess, it has shades of both which people can relate too what ever mood they’re in.
2) Saturday you take to the stage in the hallowed Ministry of Sound, what kind of set have you been preparing?
I can’t wait to be making my debut at such an iconic venue this Saturday! Ive had a few shows recently where I’ve played quite late on but am playing a little earlier here so will be playing some groovy, hypnotic house music from the likes of Frink, Chaim & Bengal amongst others. Also not forgetting lots of my new bits which I can’t wait to test out on the system.
3) We’ve noticed your name popping up with increasing regularity around the UK, how important is it to take that next step and begin touring for you as an artist?
I started DJ-ing back in my teens which steadily progressed into writing and creating my own music – from which I fell in love with. Getting music out is so key not only for me but for any artist and taking that next step to touring weekly is something I have been concentrating on heavily.
4) Music wise, we’ve seen you’ve been very busy of late with a new release on Pirupa’s Non Stop label, how did you end up collaborating with Paul Ursin?
I’d been listening to a lot of Paul Ursin as I feel his productions are amazing and draw inspiration from. He’s someone who I really rate and to keep an eye on. I’d made a demo called the ‘The Oscillator’ so I asked my management to reach out, he really liked it so I fired over the stems and I guess the rest is history, it ended up getting signed as part of his EP.
5) Although When We Dip are noted fans, for others who might not be aware, can you explain a little about what your Unorthodox project stands for?
For me its all about creating music that people can connect with and will ultimately care about and listen to for years to come. I represent such a musical approach, adding elements from instruments as much as I can whilst retaining the dance floor elements.
6) What represents Unorthodox in today’s massively hyped electronic music world? Where are there still occasional anomalies to be found?
My cinematic approach on building melodies within my records that people can really connect too either on the dance floor or in there headphones is something I pride myself on. I’ve focused a lot on instrumental elements without vocals and have tried to carve rhythms into the music I make too.
7) What are the plans for the coming months?
I’ve got a remix of Higgins coming out on Plant Music alongside Teenage Mutants and Ian Pooley next week. Original music, I’ve got a couple of releases lined up which are top secret right now as well as working on few remixes which you should hear about soon ;).
8) One tune you’re looking forward to deploying this Saturday at Ministry from Sound?
My new one ‘Printclocks’! I can’t wait to road test it for the first time on Saturday and what better place to do it at than Ministry Of Sound.
