1. DJ Tennis
He’s no stranger to the Electric Island circuit. The Life and Death label owner has been a part of the festival since the beginning and rightfully so. DJ Tennis’ sets are always a highlight of the series, and at this year’s season opener, nothing about that had changed. Drawing from his in-credibly eclectic repertoire of music, Tennis proves time and time again why he’s one of the most sought-after and established DJs of today. It’s safe to say, we’re already looking forward to his 2019 appearance…
2. YokoO [Electric Island After-Party Set]
While he rocked his set at the festival earlier that day, when YokoO took to the decks at the Electric Island after-party, magic happened. As home to the official after-party, CODA nightclub has boasted numerous mind-blowing sets, and YokoO’s will go down in history. Thriving off the more intimate setting of a night club, YokoO took audiences one state deeper, with low, sexy baselines that had everyone moving in a hypnotic groove.
3. Archie Hamilton
One of the more unique bookings of the season, we were thrilled to see the Moscow Records boss Archie Hamilton make his island debut! Even more exciting was when a change in set times saw Hamilton move from his original slot on the Moog Audio Stage, over to the Main Stage! The change clearly worked in his favour, as Hamilton laid down a healthy dose of deep, minimal groovy beats to a clearly captivated crowd. Whether or not listeners were familiar with his name prior to the event, Hamilton left a lasting impression on Toronto.
4. Ellen Allien
Landing one of Berlin’s biggest techno exports, Ellen Allien was one of those praise-worthy bookings. It was nothing short of spectacular to witness her infectious energy pour onto the dance floor. With a massive smile plastered to her face, Ellen threw down warehouse bangers for a swelling crowd.
5. Robert Babicz
There’s a reason why this man is a legend. On the Canada Day edition of Electric Island, Babicz took to the Moog Stage, playing a soulful live set to a mesmerized audience. With photography being an essential component of Robert’s art, it was as if he were creating images with his mu-sic. Weaving brilliant colours and shapes together, his set left a wonderful sense of peace and unity amongst the crowd.
6. Nathan Barato b2b Carlo Lio
Toronto home-grown talent Nathan Barato and Carlo Lio brought their Rawthentic brand back to the city where it all began, the love could be felt by all! Although these two have reached inter-national status as individual artists, it’s evident that they’re not about to forget where they came from. It was overwhelming to see the unyielding support that Barato and Lio have from friends, family and fans alike, as the dance floor busted at its seams with music lovers getting down and dirty to the relentless, cheeky beats.
So there you have it! Our Top 6 Electric Island sets unveiled. But with names like Rodriguez Jr., Loco Dice and Nicole Moudaber still to come — there’s no telling who could play their way into this list! See you at the Electric Island Season Finale on September 2 & 3. Grab your tickets here.
