The Tel Aviv electronic music scene has been a fertile ground for DJ/Producers of a deep melodic (some may say “Progressive”) persuasion in recent years. Centred around such legendary clubs as The Cat & The Dog and Haoman 17 (both now defunct), there has been a long list of talent to emerge out of their legacies.
Chico Shuella aka Chicola is one such artist. A player whose wealth of experience and expertise shines through here on 3 tracks of the utmost quality and distinction out on Selador Recordings. From ‘Cachengue’s laid-back swagger to the efficient self-assured splendour of ‘Mandragora’ and the rolling peak time energy of ‘The Black Hall’, it’s an EP for all occasions. You can listen to the full premiere of ‘Mandragora’ exclusively on When We Dip and read about the 5 albums that changed Chicola’s live. Enjoy !
1. Danny Tenaglia – Global Underground – Live In Athens 010
One of the moments that have changed the underground music Tribal meets Deep Meets Dub Techno Meets Progressive . I couldn’t stop listening to that compilation and it gave me such deep inspiration and opened the door for me to listen to so many different styles, this compilation left me with a sign that there is no such thing as one particular style and good music is good music without limits.
2. Snowboy – Casa Forte (Joe Claussell Spiritual Life Latin Samba Mix)
Joe Claussell Legendary Body & Soul Pioneer and Resident DJ alongside Danny Krivit & François K . Joe Claussell made that amazing remix and had a huge impact on me with those amazing melodies , vocals and percussion grooves. 6 Hubert & Hudson street was a church for me those Sundays afternoon in New York . You could find on the dancefloor so many djs and musicians and amazing dancers from Brooklyn and New York city. For me, that remix is a timeless souvenir for this period and for these unforgettable parties.
3. Plastikman – Panikattack
Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman debut album , that timeless album that you can listen at home and still can be played at Detroit in a warehouse party at 9am . It’s such a good album, trippy hypnotic and melt you like a plastic .
4. Dominik Eulberg – Der Tanz Der Gluehwuermchen (Kollektiv Turmstrasse Remix)
One of the best remixes I have ever heard , hypnotic groove with space melodies and crunchy snares , made 7 years ago and still sounds from the future.
5. Radiohead – Kid A
Definitely the defining moment in the Radiohead history . For me that album is on top of everything they did before that. After they released 3 years earlier the amazing Ok Computer album which was rock album full of amazing guitars they came out with this breathless Atmospheric synthesizers album. This album changed everything for me.
