D-Formation has returned to his imprint Beatfreak Recordings with another superb project entitled Aura EP. To talk more about this piece of kit for any proper Melodic House / Progressive DJ set and to know more about his plans, we sat down with D-Formation himself. He will also tell us how it feels to go through one of his best moments of his long career. While reading the interview., you can listen to the full premiere of ‘Perge’, his collaboration with Ziger. Enjoy!
WWD: Hi Dimas, nice to talk again. How are you?
First thank you WWD for this interview and the opportunity to share some words for all the followers.
I really am in a very good professional moment, everything is rolling very well as an artist for me and of course for Beatfreak Recordinngs as a label as well. They are already a lots of years of work and at the moment I am in a period of expansion, a lots of ideas in the head that finally they will come true this year 2020. For this and for all that remains to come I find myself in a happy moment.
WWD: You have been runing your label Beatfreak Recordings since 1998. Lately it is doing very well. Could you tell to all the artists who hope to sign on Beatfreak what aspects do you look for?
The sound of Beatfreak is currently a melodic sound in general. We are moving between Melodic House & Techno and Progressive House, however what we really look for is a quality music. My criteria when deciding what we can release in Beatfreak is based mainly on a fundamental aspect, I always think if the tracks would fit in my sessions. I really want Beatfreak to be an open label to new trends or new sounds just as I am when it comes to play in a club. That’s why any style that we consider the track has quality will be welcome to Beatfreak.
WWD: You have just released your newest release Aura EP on Beatfreak. It’s an ambitous project including collaborations with another artists. Tell us more about it.
As in 2019 with my mini album This is Beatfreak, for this 2020 I wanted to do the same concept, in this case (AURA) so 6 original tracks plus 2 Intro Acapella / Dj tools where you can also find some collaborations with friends and artists like Ziger, Grazze, Yaide and the vocal collaboration of the great Eleonora. As you can imagine this is the work of a few months, sometimes difficult to finish because there are always many more things to be done. But finally I was able to deliver to all my fans this EP with very good feedbacks from artists such as Solomun, Nick Warren, Cid Inc, Chus & Ceballos, AFFKT, Matan Caspi, Jobe among many others
WWD: Are there any other artists you would like to collaborate with?
I could tell you that I would like to collaborate with those who right now are the biggest ones like Tale Of Us for example, of course I would like to, but I really like collaborating with artists that we have something in common and especially the understanding between us. You can learn a lot from both great artists and artists who are not very well known. In fact I would say that in many occasions you can learn more from producers who are in the shade and are not known then from many who are currently Top. So I have no real preference at the time of a collaboration, in fact what I am looking for is to create a track and the final result is what I am looking for, no matter if it’s a collaboration or production 100% mine.
WWD: What are your favorite tunes up to date from D-Formation?
Actually there is not a single track that is my favorite, since I started as D-Formation at the end of 2003 maybe there have been 3 tracks which have marked different stages in these 17 years. First (Sings & Poterns) on my label Beatfreak at the beginning, then I think it can be (What You Want) Yoshitoshi Recordings around 2008 and finally in this last stage (Balkia) Suara, 2016. I think that these 3 tracks have been very important throughout all these years. Of course there are many other tracks that I could have chosen, but you asked for one and I gave you 3;)
WWD :How do you spend a day in the studio?
Well one day I usually wake up a little late hahahaha around 10:30 am, but don’t think I like to sleep much, the explanation is that I really like working at night in the studio, for me these are moments of traquility and inspiration, the phone doesn’t ring nor I am distracted by anything, I just think about what I am doing.
Obviously throughout a normal day I do many more things besides making music, I take care of the label and all the many things that must be done in the label together with my label manager Teddy and my partner Jesus Segura. Moreover I also do mastering and mixing for many artists and labels like Stereo Productions, MIR Music, Eat my Hat Music among others, all the mastering for my label Beatfreak too, as you can see my days are quite busy.
WWD: Can you tell us what we can expect from D-Formation and Beatfreak in the next year?
Well, sometimes the plans are changing but always for better. In terms of D-Formation this year 2020 will be the total consolidation to all my effort for years, I have great projects with great labels and artists in addition to different tours in South America, India, Australia and many other cities that are being worked on.
Regarding Beatfreak I consider it as my child, as a such it doesn’t stop growing, it is at the best moment of its more than 20 years of life. At the moment we are one of the hallmarks of the music industry and we will continue working to keep giving surprises. This year, we will also start the Beatfreak Agency. We have just confirmed our first showcase at Off Sonar Barcelona in June. After the success of our party at Amstrerdam Dance Event, we want to take the step of forming our own parties around the world.
A lot of surprises that will come throughout in 2020.
