Austrian DJ/producer, Dubesque, drops a heavyweight EP on Eats Everything & Andres Campo’s flourishing EI8HT label. Following up recent releases for Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains label and Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, Dubesque cues up four blistering tracks on the ‘Jetzt’ EP.
‘Ich Bin Jetzt’ fires out of the blocks at breakneck pace, with a funky and direct techno jam, whilst snare drums twist and scatter on ‘Jack The Box’. A touch of disco is injected into ‘Jackago’ for a deeper and impassioned club cut, and the EP is rounded off with the percussive tribal vibes of ‘U Knowles’.
You can now listen to the full premiere of ‘Ich Bin Jetzt’ while reading the great interview we had with Dubesque. Enjoy!
WWD: What an EP on EI8HT – thanks for sending this over to is. The track we are premiering ‘Isch Bin Jetzt’ – tell us about it!
Thanks! Well, there’s no particular story about the tune per se. Most of the times I just start jamming and playing around with synths or samples in the studio until I hear something I dig – and then I just take it from there. In this case I stumbled across some vocal snippets on my hard drive, and all of a sudden I thought it says the German words „Isch bin jetzt“ which in English basically means „I am now“ – doesn’t make sense at all, but I loved it and the rest somehow just fell in place!
WWD: Why release this on EI8HT?
I mean, Dan (Eats Everything) is a legend and Andres quite a name in Techno too, so when I sent Dan some tunes and he offered me to sign them to their very own imprint, I took it as a proper compliment and of course agreed. Their musical vision for the label is spot on, and being signed to EI8HT amongst all these other talent and amazing releases means a lot to me.
WWD: For those that may have not heard of you, can you tell us a little about your last 3 releases?
So the last EP was „Inside my head“ on Tiga’s label Turbo, which was quite a milestone for me as I’ve been a huge fan of Tiga and the label since 20 years. There’s only few labels with such a diverse line up and various musical styles, so being a part of the labels history now feels like an accolade for me personally. Before that I’ve released two EPs on Kneaded Pains, which feels like a home base to me, because Dense & Pika (who run the label) allow me to share my very own vision of Techno, sometimes with an „House-y“ attitude, what I appreciate a lot. When producing music or playing a DJ set, I always try to be diverse, to not think in boxes, I try to avoid to repeat myself or sound like others. Kneaded Pains, Turbo and now Ei8ht have allowed me to stay true to myself, none of the EPs really sounds like its forerunner, and that’s basically the leitmotif for me as an artist.
WWD: Can you describe your sound in 3 words?
No, I really can’t. 🙂
WWD: Of course, Corona Virus has hit us all hard. How have you found the last few months, and has this made your more creative or have you found it hard to produce music?
It’s difficult to describe, because I know I am a lucky dude living quite a privileged life and that a lot of fellow artists and people in general have had a hard time in these last few months – but I personally enjoyed that slowing down of life, being home with my wife and daughter for a lot of quality time without any distractions and re-arrange or re-think priorities. It was a different kind of inspiring, but yet inspiring. Also, I’ve produced loads of tunes without thinking about dance floors and DJ Sets, more listening stuff really. So, in a sense these past months may have complicated the approach to write music for festivals or clubs but have opened other inspiring ways to access electronic music which has ultimately led to new hybrids and ideas.
WWD: Recommend us a film or book you have watched or read during lockdown?
Film: The Lighthouse
TV Series: The Boys
Book: Shaolin – You do not need to fight to win by Bernhard Moestl
WWD: Can you tell us who you think is the most underrated artist at the moment?
That’s a tough one. I mean, producing music has become so accessible, with just a laptop and DAW everybody can express themselves musically nowadays – every time I browse through Bandcamp or Beatport or Soundcloud I hear so many dope tunes by new artists, it’s crazy and super inspiring. So, to pick just one is really hard. But if you are into Techno and want to check out a young, talented fellow Austrian producer you should definitely check out Mark Michael from Vienna, who’s just about to have his debut EP released on Terminal M!
WWD: Heading into 2021 – what are your next goals you want to achieve in terms of your career and releases?
If I can continue to release music on labels such as the ones mentioned above, I’m super happy and can’t really complain. I think if you stay true to yourself musically you will always find people who appreciate your tunes, that’s what really drives me. And of course, I hope we’ll all stay healthy and find a way to see each other on the dancefloors around the world again soon.
WWD: Finally, do you have a motto?
Be nice, be kind, be helpful – and if you reach a certain level you are obligated to send the elevator back down. Be who you needed when you were younger, helping each other out is much fun!
