Little Fritter has been a regular on the electronic music circuit for more than a decade. Having had his first release back in 2008, few artists have stayed as relevant and cutting-edge as the Gold Coast mainstay. 2020 saw him release on the likes of SOLOTOKO, Desert Hearts Records and Hot Creations. With more exciting releases for the year ahead, we’re pleased to be speaking with Little Fritter today.
WWD: Hello Kane! Great to have you with us today. First off, how are you doing and whereabouts are you based at the moment?
I’m doing great, I’m based in Australia and live on the Gold Coast.
WWD: Your release schedule for the year is about to get off to a great start with your track “5AM Slap”, featured on the upcoming Sola New Beginnings compilation. This track does what it says on the tin! Can you tell us a bit about it and how it found its home on Solardo’s Sola Records?
Yeah the track has a lot of energy for sure and the way it came about was actually on the back of a signing I had made with Sola for two other tracks of mine that will be coming out in a few months. They reached out about the compilation and asked if there was anything else I was sitting on that could work for this release so I gave them ‘5am Slap’.
WWD: How has lockdown and social distancing rules impacted the music scene where you are based?
Yeah it has impacted it for sure, some states worse than others in our country. The club scene prob got hit the worst and festivals obviously. Thankfully where I live has been one of the best places in the whole world that has dealt with the virus. I’ve been gigging loads since mid last year and I’ve been running some sick open air parties also.
WWD: The music scene as a whole is in a tough place right now – aside from making music, what’s helping keep you busy?
For sure it’s in a tough place right now especially not having the music hub of the world Europe doing its thing. So what’s been keeping me busy is my party NEED2FREAK which I started with my boy Wongo mid last year. The concept was to throw a party every time restrictions were eased coming out of covid lockdowns. Our first party was for 70 people, then we upped it to 150, then 600, and we just ran a party last week for 750 people and the kids have been going mad for it! It’s probably the best thing I’ve ever decided to do in this industry.
WWD: Over the years you’ve demonstrated a great versatility in your sound. We’d love to know a bit about your production approach and what helps you keep your music sounding fresh?
I have to keep mixing styles up for my own creativity and headspace. I can’t stay on one tip for too long, and that stems from what I listen to. I love so many different genres especially all the house sub-genres so that’s probably why the tracks I’ve put out over the years reflect that.
WWD: What’s your favourite piece of gear in the studio?
My Komplete Kontrol keyboard.
WWD: What music inspired you the most growing up and what about now also?
Growing up I really loved drum and bass, hard house and UKG , then I got right into the minimal sound… Lately some of the new school electronica, ghetto house and electro has been getting me going.
WWD: Is there anything else lined up for Little Fritter for the year ahead that you can let us in on?
Yeah the first half of the year is locked in so after this one I have an ep on Elrow, then my solo 2 track EP on Sola. Then I have a 2-tracker on Catch and Release.
WWD: Thanks again for the chat Kane! Wish you all the best and hope to catch up again soon.
Thanks guys!
