Hailing from Southern Italy, Giorgia Angiuli has been one of the more intriguing artists to rise through the ranks over the last decade or so. With a classical music education and a passion for electronic music she has shone both as producer and performer. Releasing music via Kevin Saunderson’s legendary KMS label, Stil Vor Talent and Suara, amongst others, she has held a residency at the world-famous Tenax club and shown the breadth of her talent via her WE LOVe audio/visual project. We caught up with Giorgia to talk music and the current state of the industry.
WWD: Hi Giorgia, thanks for taking the time to talk to When We Dip. Can you tell us where about in the world you are right now, and how are things locally?
Hello guys, thanks for having me. I am in Florence, in Italy and in the last months nothing really changed here. Theaters , gyms, cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants are closed, there is a curfew at 22.00 and masks are mandatory everywhere. So we still can’t see the light, it is a very dark time for health, economy, education and of course culture.
WWD: 2020 was a hugely challenging year for the music industry as well as the wider world. How have you coped over the last 12 months?
It was a real shock because my life changed completely. I spent my time in learning the art of patience and gratitude, but it was not easy, especially at the beginning. I miss our freedom a lot, a life without real (not virtual) social exchanges is really far from the human nature as the legendary Greek philosopher, Aristotele said “man is by nature a social animal”.
Of course I am trying to stay positive but I can’t wait to return to normal life, enjoying very simple things, like walking and breathing without a mask and giving a real hug to my friends. Off course my thought goes first of all to all the people that are struggling with serious mental health and economical problems, due to the covid time and I wish them a lot of strength.
WWD: You have a new single coming on the freshly launched Melodic Deep label, best known for their Soundcloud channel. How did you get involved with the label?
I follow their channel since months and I really love their taste for music, supporting beautiful melodic techno music. The guys asked me to make the first release on their new label and I was very happy to be part of it.
WWD: What can you tell us about the song ‘Your Mind is a Magnet’, how it was written and produced and what is the idea behind its title?
In the last months I read many books about mindfulness and neuroscience and I understood how much powerful can be our mind and how our thoughts can influence our destiny. So with our mind, we have the power to attract the events, as a magnet, this is also the basis of the law of attraction.
WWD: You’ve released some great music on some pretty high profile labels over the last decade plus, how has your sound evolved and changed over the year? And what have been your personal favourite releases?
I have never been influenced too much by the trends of the momentum, I always tried to stay true to myself. Music is a need, a language that helps me a lot to express my feelings, as a secret diary. I am a shy and introverted person, so I need music to talk to myself, to understand myself better and this helps me to be more connected with people; it is a kind of therapy. So my music is always a mirror of my feelings and it is always work in progress, continually changing. It’ s hard to tell you my favorite releases…maybe I would say “You shine” and “I shall never ever forget you” dedicated to my beloved mum that passed away few years ago.
WWD: You’ve held a resident at the famous Tenax club in Florence, how was your time at the club? And do you particularly enjoying the experience of a residency, as opposed to guest shows around different clubs?
It was really at the beginning of my career and it was an experience that has thought me a lot. Before Tenax I was playing electronic indie music and I was not a big fan of dance music…I studied classical music and I had a very wrong prejudice…I thought that dance music was too simple (in terms of harmony and arrangements) than I understood how beautiful and special was to play in front of a dancing crowd; people’s reaction is immediate and impulsive, it is a magic box with a huge energy exchange. So I felt in love with the concept of entrainment and foot tapping. (how humans perceive the music, with the sense of synchronization ). Thanks to this residency I started to play dance music and it was a very interesting challenge for me.
WWD: What are the things that get you excited away form the studio or club?
I love many different things and I am a hyperactive person, I always like learning new things. I really like walking in the nature, to slow down my thoughts and discovering new passions… now, for example, I am learning how to build little robots for example hahaah .
WWD: What do you have planned for the rest of 2021?
It is almost impossible to make plans right now and I am living in the moment. My biggest dream is to come back on tour as soon as possible. In the meantime I created a little team to work on a project related to neuroacoustic but I still can’t tell you many infos. I wish you all a better time, waiting for the new light. Stay safe.
