The Mekanism is a French artist with many years in the game and a CV full of illustrious labels that have put out his stuff. With another recent EP on Harry Romero’s Bambossa Records, we caught up with him to see how his life is currently, and how the recent EP came to be…
WWD: Hey The Mekanism, how is all with you right now?
Hey guys, everything’s fine! Moving a lot in South America over the last year to play and enjoy life.
WWD: How do you evolve your own sound while staying true to your roots and own signature and not jumping on new hype bandwagons?
It’s very simple, I don’t like this new hype so it’s easy for me to stay in my style! Even though I try my hand at different styles, I don’t want to go with the hype and be like everyone else to try to shine. I make my sound out of passion so it has to make me vibrate, otherwise I’ll stop the music.
WWD: Your have a new collab EP with Salomé Le Chat, when did you first meet and why did you decide to work together?
With Salome, we’ve been very close for over 8 years, we traveled a lot together in Ibiza, Burning Man, and we have the same group of friends. We played a lot together, and as the vibe went very well together, we decided to do an ep together.
WWD: What inspired the new one on Bambossa Records?
Just to transcribe the vibe that we both release when we play together through an ep!
WWD: Who did what, did you each take care of certain parts of the music?
Salomé brought me the ideas, the piece to be sampled for the Love Affair, then I did my little cook and we finished the pieces together. It was very natural and easy to work together on this project.
WWD: Do you sound different when working with someone else vs when working alone?
It is obvious that working with someone opens up new horizons for you, and ideas that you had not necessarily thought of. It also allows you to have an outside opinion and to block less. The spirit of the person is also very important because it will change the general vibe
WWD: What are some of the bits of gear or music making tools you have that currently define your sound do you think?
Mpc one and electribe for the beats. Yamaha RM1X + Roland mc 505 for basses and synths. My modular system to work on vocals and differents textures. I plug all machines in Roland toraiz as master sequencer.
WWD: Do you make the tunes you want to play in your own sets, is there a direct link like that?
It’s bit old but I really love my EP on Seth Troxler label “Acid Love”, I play often this one and another is “Lost Girl” they are very powerful.
WWD: Are you concerned with your environmental impact as a dj, and what can you do about it if so?
Obviously I am concerned by the environmental impact as a dj. I do lots of small gestures in order to have a balance because traveling by plane is not environmental at all but having no choice, I try to compensate otherwise. For example I returned my car two years ago and I now use the metro.
WWD: And to close out this interview, what else have you got coming up/are you working on?
I have an EP on UK label Wyld with my good friends II faces and an amazing remix from Madvilla. Then in 2022 an AP on new label of Distrikt (Burning man camp), that I’m super excited about this one as well
Thank you for the interview my friends!!!!!
