Label owners Supernova are back on their imprint Lapsus Music with a new single ‘Get High’. For the occasion, we had a chat with the duo to talk about it. Enjoy while listening to the full premiere exclusively on Dancefloor Romancer.
WWD: Hey Supernova, thanks for joining us today on When We Dip. Can you tell us about your journey into electronic music? How and where did you first meet and start making music together?
Music is our passion since we were kids. We started our singles careers at the end of the 80’ at 14 years old and we never stopped from those days. We met in 2002 during a party where I was playing (Emiliano). I talked to Giacomo about a new musical project that I was developing with a really cool Club in Florence where I was the Sunday DJ resident. I wanted to write a CD Album for them and I was searching for a good recording studio to produce my ideas. Giacomo lived in Milan in those years and he had a very nice studio there. We started working together for this project. We immediately felt a specific alchemy making music together, we quickly became true friends. This is how Supernova and their first album “Afterbeach” was born.
WWD: How have you seen electronic music change since you released your first music?
Music changes very quickly due to the massive use of internet and social media. Making records is easier today and everyone can do it. You can buy music everywhere and nowadays streaming is also a really popular way to enjoy music too. Music runs fast. Records had a long life when we started with vinyl and the musical genres were more solid. Anyway, we started playing and producing electronic underground music and we still playing electronic underground music. Good music is still good music!
WWD: Your latest release ‘Get High’ sees you make a return to your label Lapsus Music, which you launched back in 2008. It has become a hugely respected and important label within electronic music. Can you tell us where the concept for the label came from? And what is the ethos of the label?
Lapsus Music was an important turning point in our career. From that day we were able to design our musical project / journey and we were able to create a big family launching many new talents and releasing many “heroes” of the electronic scene. Lapsus developed the concept of music sharing, clubbing and friendship. We feel lucky to have brought the label’s showcases around the world with a such beautiful family full of amazing artists and friends. Can’t wait for the last one, Get High!!!
WWD; The last few years have seen you start the Downtown Underground and Blackboard labels as well. The progression from 1 to 3 labels is a big undertaking, what inspired you to start the new labels? And what’s your vision for the labels?
After almost 10 years of Lapsus Music we felt the need to overcome some borders music wise both as producers and as A&R. A lot of music demos were coming into our email and was a shame to not have space to release all the good stuff we were receiving. We also needed to release all the music we like and we played in clubs in the right genre for each label. Today each label has its own genre and a specific mood.
WWD: Italy has a strong electronic music scene with a lot of history, how have you seen it change over the years? And how does it feel to be such an important part of the evolution?
Italy played an important role in the evolution of electronic music clubbing, especially during the 1990s. We grew up artistically and as men in that period. It has been an important school for us, a music culture we still proudly share with us today.
WWD: You’ve been releasing music as a duo for almost 20 years, can you tell us about your writing process when you go into the studio? How has it changed over the years?
It has always been a pleasure to work together as a duo in the studio. Writing as a duo is really interesting because each one of us can give the other a quick feedback on what he is playing. This fast turnaround makes the production process really creative. Back in the days we were both working mostly in the same room on the same project while nowadays we have two production rooms. We both often start working on different projects and then we finish them all together.
WWD: How have you remained so creatively focused over the last 2 decades of making music? And What inspires you every day in the studio?
To produce music and play it in front of a crowd in a club has always been our dream since we were children and it’s still the same. So, we are simply getting up every morning with that goal in mind and walking into the studio.
WWD: As a duo making music together, how do you combine your influences and creative output when in the studio?
We trust each other a lot and we had similar music influences so it’s always good to share ideas during the creative moment because we feel that two minds are better than one. Of course, sometimes we can have different opinion about how a track should evolve for example, but we always find a way to makes things work for both. That’s how a Supernova track comes out!
WWD: What advice do you have for those duos making electronic music? How do you make sure that you are both sharing the vision for the music and sound you are making?
First you need to respect and understand the person you are making music with. This will help to make the right choice every time you have different positions. Be open, listen and give the right value to the feedback of your musical partner and at same time, always be open to tell them what you really think.
WWD: Who have been the most influential people in your musical journey so far?
Hard to say just a name here. We have been influenced by such great artists and to be honest we still haven’t finished being influenced. Producing music is a journey that never ends and you have to always be open to hear what’s happening around you.
WWD: What have been the most important moments of your career so far?
Building a company that runs 3 record labels and a publishing company is for sure one of our big achievements and we are proud to still be doing what we love with Supernova after almost 20 years.
WWD: What plans do you have for 2022 and beyond?
After the release of our new single Get High on Lapsus Music and another in March on Blackboard, we are working on a new EP for 8Bit (April) and have sent out a lot of music for new signings, so hopefully we will have the release schedule full for 2022.
At same time we want to work on our new album to be released in 2023 as part of our Supernova 20th Year celebration. We are also launching our new be monthly mix series “The House Of Super”. Gigs wise we will be back on tour in April in Mexico and South America as well as Italy and Europe while during the summer we will run the artist direction and be regular guests of an amazing beach club in Porto Cervo (Sardinia) called Vesper Beach Club with lots of good artists and parties coming over to be next to us in the booth.
