David Orin has been a key figure in New York’s surging deep and melodic scene in recent years. His patent blend of rhythmic percussion and intricate melodies have seen him garnering consistent support from the likes of Lee Burridge, Hernan Cattaneo, and Kora, as well as seeing him grace renowned imprints such as Anjunadeep and All Day I Dream. This week, we caught up with the rising talent to run through the creative process behind his brand new remix for Montreal duo HOKI and to chat on his 2022 so far!
WWD: Thanks for joining us David! Your new remix of HOKI ‘Growing Young’ is out now. Can you give us an insight into how the remix process went down?
I really wanted to keep the vibe of the original version and just have it translate to the dance floor a bit more. The wanted to add a surprising element and ended up writing some stabs that really reminded me of Underworld. I dropped the vocal out for the end of the track after the break to allow for a pure transition when djing. I try to be as spontaneous as I can and never have a template for any of my projects.
WWD: 2022 has been a very busy year for you to date. What have been your highlights thus far?
Traveling to play shows is somewhat new to me. Visiting all of the new places and meeting so many amazing new friends has really been the highlight of the past year!
WWD: Lee Burridge has been super supportive of your music. How did that relationship start?
I was very lucky to have great friends around me that shared my music with him and my amazing friend and old agent Kristine for the introduction. Lee gave me some great opportunities and it went from there.
WWD: What are you most looking forward to this Summer?
I’m super excited for my very first time in Montreal, this July, to play Picnic Electronik for When We Dip. I’m definitely going to stay in town a few days to connect with Kora and my Saisons family and hope to see more of beautiful Montreal while I am there!
WWD: Who / what are your biggest influences right now?
Over the past few years, I’ve really been getting into the ambient and Romanian sounds. I love the intricacies of the Romanian drums and the trippyness of Ambient music. R Beny has been a staple in my ambient listening collection for as long as I can remember. It’s incredible how he can take literally any piece of gear and create absolute magic with it. Calling out specific artist for the Romanian sound is a bit more difficult, but I’ve been loving Janeret and pretty much everything that comes out on the Joule imprint.
I’m really trying to break the mold of making the same templatized music that’s been running rampant for the past few years and have been really expanding my music library to help with this!
WWD: One goal you’d still like to achieve in 2022?
My goal this year is to just continue to increase my musical footprint. Working with amazing friends and artists to share our music.
WWD: Are there any other exciting projects on the radar that we should know about?
I have an EP with my closest friend, Jon Charnis that has literally been years in the making that is just about finished. My next release on Saisons is also just around the corner and I’m closing our about 10 new songs that I’ve been working on for quite a while and will be sending them off soon.
