Today, it’s an honour for us to host on the Main Mix Series a duo that keeps pushing the boundaries of their genre in crafting a sound that is unquestionably theirs. Super Flu, through releases on the likes of Get Physical, Watergate and their very own Monaberry, as well as remixes for and from top dogs such as Oliver Koletzki and Solomun, have settled themselves at the vanguard of the ever-bubbling German melodic techno scene. For WWD 134, Matthias and Feliks have crafted an hour-long set mostly encompassing their own productions and remixes, a crescendo of sorts, leading to the grand finale, their re-interpretation of Reza Safinia’s ‘Funkbible’. The guys have also kindly answered our questions about their most recent outing, their studio dynamic and more! Enjoy!

WWD: Hello Matthias and Feliks. Thanks for being with us today and for recording that mix for our Main Mix Series! What have you been up to lately? 

Thanks for having us and the opportunity to deliver a nice mix to the series. 

At the moment we are touring through Mexico and the United States and are very grateful. We can do what we love nearly without any regulations. Beside touring we spend the most time in the studio working on new stuff and finishing remixes.

WWD: Your most recent track, your remix of Reza Safinia’s ‘Funkbible’ is out today. I want to ask you, what was the thing that struck you at first from the original mix? What pages of that bible of funk attracted your attention and gave you the idea for your ‘re-interpretation’? 

The detailed layering and great sound scapes of the original were the first things that tracked our attention. We felt in love the first time we heard it. And from this attention we started to think of a Super Flu re-interpretation more than a remix, because we didn’t want to be too close to the great original song. The vocal and the energy gave us a clear idea of our version.

WWD: I also saw you mention previously that once you got an 8-bar loop for a remix ‘the rest is peanuts’. Was it also the case this time around? Was it as flowy this time around? 

Haha… This time it wasn’t that easy, because we always wanted to improve the previous version and didn’t really come to an end. So the final version was a completely new start.

WWD: A question I always tend to ask duos is about the sort of relationship they have in the studio. How would you describe yours? Is there someone that’s more ‘at the helm’, directive whenever you two are working together? Is there sort of an additive-subtractive dynamic to your process of coming up with new pieces?

After such a long time together, the roles are clear and we can rely on each other totally. Mathias is great in listening to music and deciding if it is worth to work on it or not. Feliks is more the part working on details and bringing everything in shape. Of course sometimes it is explosive, but always in a good way…

WWD: Let’s dive in the mix itself, what was your approach to recording it? Any special moments to look out for? 

The mix itself is super fresh and reflects what we are playing and in love with at the moment. But we also wanted a mix that you can listen to for a while which doesn’t get boring with all the hits everyone’s playing at the moment. We think it worked out well.

You are very welcome. Music, music, music… We work on new music and enjoy the possibilities of traveling and dancing with people again.
