Lopezhouse return to Bedrock after their debut album ‘Apollo’ came last year as part of the groundbreaking Quattro Artists release. Over the last ten years, the pair of David López and Carlos Cruz have really excelled with their emotive and stylish sounds and now their Iraila EP is their fourth single release on Bedrock.
We caught up with the duo to talk about the release, inspiration, studio setup, and more.
WWD: Hey guys! How was your Xmas and New Years break? Where did you spend it?
Hi everyone, we were working at the studio but mostly we spent time with family and friends and had good rest.
WWD: How did you both first get into electronic music and where and when?
We were born in a town where the electronic music scene wasn´t big, there weren´t any clubs. Then we went to Madrid to carry on our studies about 20 years ago. There we had the chance to know many clubs and record shops and discover electronic music at that moment.
WWD: How did you hook up with the Bedrock label on your upcoming “Iraila” release and what does it mean to you?
We have been working with Bedrock for years and we have a good relationship with them. We always keep them updated with our work. Iraila is our 5th EP on the legendary Bedrock Records, and just for this reason is so important for us and our career.
WWD: What’s John like to deal with, is he hands-on in terms of what he wants the music to sound like?
Dealing with John is easy, he respects our job from the beginning. He gives us total freedom and support. He might give us some advice but the music-making process is all us.
WWD: What’s the inspiration behind the music you have made for the new EP?
We don’t always produce music with a particular idea in mind, most of the time we meet at the studio and start working, but in this case, we have tried to make a little wink to two reference bands for us, Motorhead and The Who.
WWD: How differently did you approach it to your album?
When John told us about making Apollo it was in the middle of the pandemic and it was unthinkable to go clubbing. That circumstance influenced our everyday matters, the films we watched, the music we listened and our habits. Now the world is open and people want to dance, go out and have fun so we tried to make music for this new world.
WWD: What gear did you use and does that matter?
The Gear doesn´t really matter, we use a Synth and a MIDI Keyboard. The only particular thing we use is Carlos´s bass guitar a Fender with a Vintage sound.
WWD: What have you learned about each other over the last ten years?
David: The most important thing I´ve learned from Carlos, is that you must use fresh yeast when you are making pizza dough.
Carlos: And from David, I am still learning – not to be late…
WWD: What hopes have you got for 2023?
We hope to be able to keep working and do many lives watching many people dancing and enjoying our music.
WWD: What else have you got coming up?
We have many projects in progress, currently, we have a remix for a Spanish Indie band and planning a Latin American tour for 2023 and more music. Many thanks for this opportunity and all the best to everyone this year.
