You can’t separate Yoshitoshi and Sharam; since its inception back in the mid-noughties the label always been the legendary, Grammy Award winning DJ and producer’s musical playground. Aside from his own productions, whether solo or as one-half of Deep Dish (alongside Dubfire), it’s been responsible for some of the finest dance music on the planet. Tracks such as Alcatraz – ‘Giv Me Luv’; Eddie Amador – ‘House Music; Luzon – ‘The Baguio Track’; Chiapet – ‘Westworld’ and Dino Lenny – ‘I Feel Stereo’ are the just the tip of an iceberg that runs deep. Very deep.
Now Sharam returns to Yoshi with an AA-side that’s contemporary, yet celebrates the label’s genre-bending, house roots. “I’ve never been comfortable with singular styles and genres,” explains Sharam, “anyone who’s followed my DJ sets over the years will know they can be an eclectic ride, which has always been the ethos I’ve applied to Yoshi. But, at its heart, the one constant you can identify is house music – and there’s definitely a deep, purist feel to these latest 2 tracks, which I’m excited to get out there.”
First-up is the wonderfully titled ‘All Night Bong’ with its chunky, funky bassline providing he perfect foil to a haunting top line and sassy vocal. It’s the best of Chicago and New York club-history rolled into one infectious, modernist take, which has been an ever-evolving weapon of Sharam’s for quite some time, as he explains, “I’ve had this in the secret vaults and been tinkering with it off and on. As we turn the corner into the new year, with the pandemic firmly in the rear view mirror, the time finally feels right to drop it.”
‘That Juno Track’ continues in a similar vein with its killer bassline that comes straight out of Deep Dish’s Sandy B ‘World Go Round’ stable. If house music really is ‘all night long’, one can only hope every record played is as good as this. “The reaction to ‘Juno’ has been amazing. The moment it drops it gets an insane head turner response on the road. It was great to return to a bassline-driven project, it’s admittedly been a while!”, concludes Sharam.
