From hosting artists like Reznik, Super Flu, Lehar, and Andhim on Anomaly Radio to launching a label of their own, Nick and Harry have spent the last decade building a community around the music they love. Now, with the arrival of Anomaly Music and its debut release from Redfreya, the duo are taking their vision one step further – creating a platform for melodic, emotive, and timeless dance music. We sat down with the pair to talk about the label’s origins, their inspirations, and why there’s still plenty of room for seven-minute tracks in today’s electronic landscape.
WWD: Hi Nick & Harry, thanks for speaking with When We Dip! Congratulations on the launch of Anomaly Music! What made you decide to stop your Anomaly Radio podcast after 6 years and launch a label?
Thank you, we are so pleased to be chatting with you! It’s been a two-year journey to get to this point, but we are thrilled that the launch has finally come to fruition.
The decision to transition from purely being a radio show was a natural evolution. Through the show, we had the pleasure of hosting our favourite international artists – including Reznik, Marcus Worgull, Whitesquare, Andhim, Super Flu, Argia, Musumeci, Lehar, Skatman, The Drifter, and Johannes Brecht, to name just a few. We loved it, but we always knew the vision was bigger than a podcast.
Recently, we felt the scene shifting in a direction we weren’t particularly vibing with. We did the only thing that made sense: we pulled the trigger and decided to create a home for the music we wanted to hear.
WWD: How did you both meet and how did you get here?
We met back in 2014 on the dancefloor of a Sydney rave and immediately became best mates. Two years later, on the dancefloor of a Kollektiv Turmstrasse gig, we made the decision to join forces musically. Four years after that, Anomaly Radio was created. Six years later, Anomaly Music was born.
Our shared passion for music and creativity is what led us to this point. This is a true passion project for both of us, and we are so excited to be building this legacy together.
WWD: Your first Anomaly Music release is from Redfreya with ’The Waves’ EP. What made you decide to choose Redfreya for the label’s debut release?
With Anomaly Music, the goal is to bring soul, melody, and depth back to the forefront of dance music. Since 2020, electronic music has become progressively harder and faster, and in that race for BPMs, we feel like some of the storytelling has been lost. It was incredibly important that our first release set the tone for bringing that deeper sound back.
As soon as we heard Redfreya’s ‘Reverse the Process’ last year, we were completely enamored and knew she was the perfect fit to open our catalog. When we reached out, it turned out she had actually been following our journey for years. It was total serendipity – it was meant to be.
WWD: What other artists do you have planned for future Anomaly Music releases?
We have a packed release schedule locked in, but we are keeping the specific names close to our chests for now! What we can say is that with the label, expect a similar approach to how we curated the radio show – a beautiful mix of both established international heavyweights and incredibly talented rising producers who align with our ethos. Expect a lot of emotion, intricacy, and serious dance floor moments over the next year. Oh, and yes… we are actively looking to work with artists who still want to release 7-minute tracks.
WWD: Which artist would be your dream artist to appear on the label?
That’s an easy one: Mano Le Tough. His sound is the absolute epitome of the music we love – it’s like a fine wine that just keeps getting better with age. If you’re reading this, Mano, consider this our official call to action. Our inbox is always open!
WWD: What labels have inspired you and Anomaly Music?
The imprints that have served as our major blueprints over the years are Diynamic (specifically that golden 2013-2020 era), Innervisions, Exit Strategy, the early days of Keinemusik, VOD, and Maeve.
WWD: You previously hosted Anomaly events at Sisyphos in Berlin, Electric Bar in Melbourne, and a Secret Warehouse Party in Sydney. Will there be Anomaly Music label events too?
Absolutely. Over the years, we have been incredibly selective with the events we curate. We operate under the philosophy that every party we throw needs to have the potential to be our audience’s next favourite night out – the kind of experience that stays with you for years. The three events we’ve hosted so far remain some of our favourite nights of our lives.
This year, we are officially bringing that Anomaly energy back to clubs across Germany, the UK, and Australia. We want to recreate that distinct, intimate community vibe on a grander scale. Watch this space.
WWD: Will you be releasing music on Anomaly Music yourselves?
Yes! Harry has been producing behind the scenes for years and has previously released on Super Flu’s Monaberry, so the definitive plan is for him to anchor the label with his own music. As for Nick, he is purely a DJ and will be focusing his energy on this and steering the A&R direction for the label. It gives us a really balanced dynamic.
WWD: We can’t wait to listen! Thanks for the chat 🙂
