To celebrate the release of his debut album, Skin, Lazarusman has recorded an exclusive new mix for our Select Cuts series. After more than a decade spent lending his voice to some of electronic music’s most respected producers, the South African artist is finally stepping forward with his first full-length project: a deeply personal and thought-provoking body of work that explores identity, race, faith, love and belonging in post-apartheid South Africa.
You have most likely come across Lazarusman before through his collaborations with artists such as Stimming, Booka Shade, Dwson and FKA Mash. His unmistakable spoken-word style and emotionally charged storytelling have made him one of the most distinctive voices in electronic music over the past ten years, even earning him a Grammy nomination in 2021 for his contribution to ‘Dear Future Self’.
On Skin, Lazarusman blends poetry with deep, tech and Afro house, alongside breakbeat and jazz influences and productions from artists including Stimming, FKA Mash, Johannes Brecht, Boogie Vice and Axone. The album feels both intimate and political, less a statement about identity than a reflection on what it means to live inside one. Across the record he examines colourism, inherited belief systems, masculinity, tenderness and survival, while always leaving room for hope and human connection.
His Select Cuts mix carries that same spirit, weaving together tracks from the album and beyond into a warm, immersive journey that moves effortlessly between reflection and release.
You can now listen to the full mix of ‘Lazarusman’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
