WWD 028 welcomes one of the green isle’s most highly respected techno merchants. His back catalogue includes releases on the likes of Turbo Recordings, Soma and Gigolo as well as an incredibly well received debut album on Sven Väth’s Cocoon imprint. More recently, he has also impressed under the guise of his alternative electronic project Le Carousel, releasing both an impressive LP and the scintillating ‘Destroy Us’ EP.
We’re talking about Mr Phil Kieran of course! He joined us this week for a chat ahead of his massive FUSED Electronica Weekender with Grumbling Fur, Andrew Weatherall, which kicks off this Friday.
WWD : Thanks for joining us Phil! Great to have you here.
The Fused Electronica Weekend kicks off June 11th (to 13th), can you tell about the concept behind the event?
It starts off with a sound installation and ends of with per djing , in-between is Grumbling Fur , Andrew Weatherall and me , so it’s very diverse .
WWD : Your looking after its curation, what were you looking for when making the artist selection?
I didn’t want it to be just a weekend of Djs nor did I want it to be a sit down and listen to somebody play a saw for three hours, I just wanted all electronic music and sounds from across the board with what we could afford in small venue.
WWD : Have you faced any challenges in putting the line-up together?
It wasn’t that difficult to be honest, I was delighted when Andrew agreed to do one of the nights start to finish all by himself, I’m really looking forward to that!
WWD : You’ve also just played AVA Festival, a brand new event in Belfast. The scene seems to be in great health right now, does that excite you?
Yes of course, Belfast people really want it but we have politicians who insist in trying to close venues early and stopping people staying out late, it’s very frustrating for everybody who lives here.
WWD : You’ve been pushing the audio/visual boundaries recently with your Anon project, what does the future hold for that?
We have a really cool one lined up for July so just finishing up details on it now !! we will announce it very soon.
WWD : Production wise, where does the focus lie over the next few months? We’re big fans of your Le Carousel project and love the results, especially the title track “Carousel”. How did the name come about? Were you a fan of carousels as child?
Thank you very much , its a project very close to me and I want to work on a second album , I’m just finishing a kind of house/ indie project that will be going out under another name and on a well known label , I can’t say much more than that for now.
WWD : Before we sign off, are there any other big dates on the horizon for you that we should be aware of?
Off for a Brazil tour in June, very excited for that!!
