Onwards we go with the 5 for 15 series! Following on from an incredibly tight Breen performance last week, we welcome a Montréal based producer who seized our attention in 2014 with sublime house cuts on Berlin’s Get Physical and DJ Sneak’s I’m A House Gangster imprint. Jay London, now a resident at the renowned Stereo, has all the ingredients to make 2015 his own. We’re delighted to have him join us for a chat and, kindly, he’s rinsed a fine collection of tunes for the WWD family. You can check it all out below!

WWD : Great to have you in the hot seat Jay! Where are you right now and what’s the schedule been like this week?

Jay : My pleasure, thanks for having me! I am actually in Montreal at the moment wrapping up a few projects in the studio and also in the process of organizing our RAW Moments Anniversary party which will be held at the end of the month at our home base, Stereo.

WWD : 2014 was a big year for you, what can we expect from you in 2015?

Jay : Haha I wouldn’t say big but it was definitely my first introduction to the international scene as an artist as I signed my first records with my longtime friend and mentor, Paolo Rocco on Get Physical and I’m a House Gangster which also led to a few bookings outside my city. Other than that, I will be moving to Berlin for a few months as of April and I’m very excited for 2015 as I have been spending most my time in the studio for the past 6 months and I’m looking forward to these releases.

WWD : RAW Moments, a night you run with Paolo Rocco celebrates its first anniversary at the end of the month, any standout highlights from the first twelve months?

Jay : Definitely plenty of highlights. We launched it 1 year ago and the last 2 parties were sold out which proved to us that the brand is growing with each party and we’re very thankful for that.

WWD : What does the next year have in store for the brand?

Jay : Next year we’re hoping to host a few parties outside the city and also showcase some fresh talent Paolo and I have been working closely with in Montreal.

WWD : As you mentioned, Paolo is a longtime friend, mentor, collaborator. How did you guys first meet?

Jay : Paolo and I came from a very similar background. We started off by DJing hip hop and club nights in the city. Once we started falling in love with house music, the underground scene in Montreal didn’t quite accept us from the start because our names were very present in the more commercial realm. I actually decided at the time to switch my DJ name and I started getting a few residencies where I was booking Paolo on my nights. That’s pretty much how our partnership started out. I was very fortunate that Paolo put me under his wing and I definitely owe this last year to him.

WWD : You guys have a release forthcoming on Paris imprint La Vie En Rose, what can you tell us about that?

Jay : Yes! La Vie En Rose is a label that we’ve always had a lot of respect for. They are constantly putting out forward-thinking material and we’ve always been big fans of the french underground sound. The release is a forthcoming 4 track EP and it will feature myself, Paolo and our friend Pijynman.

WWD : You’ve been kind enough to put a mix together for us, can you tell us a little bit about what’s in there?

– I tried to put together a 1 hour mix that would represent me as a DJ. There’s some classics, there’s some exclusives in there from friends, and also a few vinyls that I got recently.

WWD : Obviously you’re one of the guys impressing us at the moment but who are the new artists catching your eye right now? Any local Montréal talent we should look out for?

Jay : Lessi s, Pijynman and Physica are the 3 artists that I mentioned earlier Paolo and I have been working with in Montreal. We’re fans of these guys, and you should be seeing some of their material coming out in 2015, then it’s up to you guys to judge!
