Dutch twosome Esteble continue a rich vein of form this month with a debut release on much renowned German imprint Laut & Luise. The four track ‘Ardent’ EP follows up poweful singles ‘Socotra’ (Stil Vor Talent) and ‘Buchlapest’ (DHL), which dropped earlier this year. The new release threads a deeper, downtempo line, offering up a delectable listening experience. The four pieces of music combine seamless in over 24 minutes of engrossing electronic wonder. You can hear it out in full below. What’s more, we had the opportunity to sit down with Joep & Bram, the men behind the project, and get an essential insight into their creative process.
WWD – First off, Joep & Bram, a huge congratulations on releasing the Ardent EP. What do you see as the driving theme behind the project as a whole?
Thank you, Thomas. The Ardent EP creative side we would say is the slow tempo and the continuity we started to experiment with, it gives you a lot of room to experiment and discover. We played around with sounds we recorded some time ago and didn’t use and parts of old tracks that never been released in a new context. Creatively and the driving theme we really see Ardent EP as a journey from beginning to end, that is why we decided to make everything flow into each other, to experience the Ardent EP as a whole. We never saw the ep as separated tracks, more as different moods. The names we choose refer back to this, hinterland meaning a no mans land, Ardent refers back to burning or glowing feeling; you get to explore and go on a journey (wayfarer) and Pathfinder, someone that discovered and shows others the way.
WWD – How does your first release on Laut & Luise differ from previous Esteble projects, such as your Feathers EP (Anjunadeep)?
We worked on this project as a whole, on the Feathers EP every track was a different project. Ardent is actually one project with over 100 layers, in the end the computer had a pretty tough time running it! Joep started working on the Ardent EP one night, working with old recordings and putting down the basic concept which we then worked around and build upon. This was actually an on/off project we turned back too over the course of 1 year, it was actually a nice thing to work on since it is quite different than all the other stuff we were working on in the meantime. We always try to challenge ourself with new projects and try not to fall back on old habits, we don’t want to get bored and present our fans with some fresh music.
WWD – What would be your perfect setting for listening to the Ardent EP? Did you have a specific scene or vibe in mind while creating the cinematic tracks?
I think that depends on the listener and their current mood but probably somewhere quiet with some HQ headphones outside and good speakers inside! It could on the couch or outside in the woods, feeling comfortable is the most important thing. We hoped to spark people’s imagination and let them wander off for a bit.
WWD – Do you have any unique production routines or rituals while creating in the studio?
We love to drink cappuchino’s but this is not nessarily a must to be creative! We don’t really have rituals starting on new music but we do like to play video’s and our music together mid way in our creative process. We also like to scroll throught weird documentary’s and such and maybe get inspired on find something cool/weird the build upon.
WWD – What else have you been listening to recently? What’s been each of your ‘track of the summer’ so far?
I wouldn’t say we have a specifically ‘track of the summer’ but we both really enjoyed Khruangbin new album! This is not electronic music but goes really well with the hot summer currently in the Netherlands. We listened to all sorts of music honestly.
WWD – What do you have in store for the upcoming months? Any new music or live shows in the works?
We are currently working on a new ep with different energy levels, which we are really excited for and our new liveset is in the making. We have some cool idea’s for the liveset and we are checking how to incorperate these. We like posting snippets of our livese on facebook and instagram, basically trying new things, a process of trial and error.
