German producer Christian Löffler exemplifies what it truly means to be an artist, possessing boundless creativity, originality and authenticity, it is no surprise that he has become one of the most esteemed and recognisable names in the electronic music scene. We sat down with him to learn more about his latest track ‘Solo’ and how it offers an epic return to his roots.

WWD: Hello Christian, welcome to When We Dip. Could you please tell us a bit about your new track and how you made it? Was there anything specific that you wanted to convey with Solo?

After my latest album Parallels where I reworked classical music masters like Beethoven and Chopin, I felt the need to go back to my first love which is strictly electronic music. It felt like restarting again, like going back to when I discovered House and Techno and it was pure joy being in the studio working on some up-tempo beats.

WWD: You’ve spent a lot of time working collaboratively over the past few years. Was there a specific moment when you realised that you wanted to make something alone?

After my albums Lys and Parallels, where I was collaborating or working with other people’s material, I knew that I wanted to go back to a more simple setup that is closer to my original idea of creating electronic music. It felt like traveling back in time, downloading tons of plug-ins, and just enjoying the process of creating something without any boundaries.

WWD: How did you find that experience of working collaboratively and was it strange to be working independently again on this track?

It felt absolutely natural. I still love to collaborate with other artists, but it was amazing to have a blank canvas to fill again just on my own.

WWD: As well as being a musician, you are also an artist and painted the cover for the track. What was the inspiration behind that creative process and is there a reason you chose that specific image?

It had to be this specific image as it shows my favourite spot at the seaside around here where I live. I love to go there and reset my mind after touring to gather new ideas or just meditate. If it’s not holiday season, beaches are pretty empty up here and that was one of these days where I was alone out there. I was coming back to that photo while thinking about a possible artwork for ‘Solo’. I printed it a few times and started painting on it. I had the feeling of seeing more layers in the dunes and that coastline in the background. I tried to work that out and make it visible.

WWD: What’s coming up next in your schedule? Is there anything exciting on the horizon?

On the 6th of May I’ll be releasing another new track called ‘New Fires’. I’m very excited to share it as I’ll be putting out more new songs in the coming weeks.
