Doctor Dru is a stable name in the scene for at least a decade now. Always pleasing us with some exquisite output which we had the pleasure to feature a few times on our blog. The next one coming up is no exception. ‘Pop Corn Odyssey’ has a very specific drive with some hints to past decades we love so much. Included in the EP ‘New Moon’ on his imprint JEUDI Records, it is coming out on the 1st of July, 2022.
Ahead we had a quick questionnaire for the artist alongside the exclusive premiere of ‘Pop Corn Odyssey’. Enjoy!
WWD: Congratulations on your new release, we love the song name Pop Corn Odyssey. How did you come up with this one?
Thanks, guys! This tune for long had another name as a production title. I was setting up my new computer and while I was waiting for all the plug ins to install I started this idea on my old computer. So I named it “ Warten auf Installation” which is german and just means “Waiting for installation”. I first wanted to keep it this way but then realised no one I played it to could remember the name and was just mumbling some words when referring to the track. I like to give my tracks names which are not already there. This one came quite fast when I was listening to the tune. The arp thats coming in reminded me of the old classic “popcorn” by synth legend Gershon Kingsley. And the drop with the 80s synthpad sounds like a space odyssey. There was the name.
WWD: How was your creative process / production approach on this one?
This one was quite a fast draft as I have mentioned happening during installation process of my new computer. My ideas are mostly happening fast. Then I’m very specific when it comes the sound design. This tune is completely in the box. No external analogue stuff. Generally I mix both worlds as I have some nice outboard synths and I like the hands on approach. But in the end I don’t care where the sound comes from and I would not bet on that I hear the difference with all these great analog emulations out there.
WWD: Where does inspiration generally come from for you?
Normally I have to sit and do. I’m not like walking outside and coming up with ideas running to the studio and dropping them. I have to sit and spent time in the studio and play. Once the joyful playing is happening ideas are falling from the sky. This state is the one I’m looking for. Therefore I need to forget daily topics and just focus on the music and let it happen. It feels a bit like the process you go through to get into the deep meditation mood. All the clouds of daily life you just let them pass to come into this playful mood that kids are always in naturally. This is where creativity happens and where it is most pleasant and joyful, at least for me.
WWD: You are releasing mostly on your label JEUDI, why?
I am so lucky that I have my own label with a good reputation and reach. I like the direct and responsive contact to the a&r which is me, haha. The rock solid release dates, the promotion work we do and the reliable accounting. We kept it a bit slow recently with releasing artists but we are cooking something and demos are very welcome and are listened to.
WWD: Whats your working schedule for the summer and further?
Aside of playing and producing my stuff of which some music is circling with different labels in the moment I have recorded and produced life music again. My old passion. Also some DJs kept asking me if I would mix their productions as they liked my sound approach and I thought: why not? Tried on a few productions and I got great feedbacks from the artists. As a studio geek I felt theres so much to learn again. That made me happy so I will keep on doing it. Still my focus is on my output as an artist but music generally is such a beautiful field to explore. And during the calm times when we could not play I started to explore again more outside of our bubble and realised that I missed this a lot.
WWD: Thanks for taking your time for us and we are wishing you a great success with your release and upcoming projects!
Thanks a lot, guys! Always a pleasure and thank you for your continuous support of my label and our artists. hugs and a happy summer!
