Born in New York City and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey by Cuban parents, Barbarito Capote aka DJ Dove had devoted most of his career fine-tuning the sultry sounds heard throughout his eleven years as a producer. Over a career spanning multiple decades Dove has performed alongside such luminaries as DJ Disciple, Roger Sanchez, Bob Sinclar, Todd Terry, Robbie Rivera and has collaborated in the studio with many more.
DJ Dove’s most notable productions have included Inaya Day’s I’m Touched and Unkind with Milk ‘N’ Sugar, as well as Nobody But You featuring Ladylife, with a sound that rooted in classic house and US garage. More recently Dove has moved into tech house territory, releasing on labels like Circus and Wyldcard, and now lands on Unlearn with the two-track Your Lovin My Lovin / Booty.
WWD: Hello DJ Dove, thanks for talking with us at When We Dip. Where are you at the moment, how are you spending the day?
It’s truly an honor and pleasure thank you so much. I’m home starting my day early morning just going thru emails, sorting out new music and working on my social media.
WWD: What are your earliest memories of music?
My earliest memories were myself trying to master the art of spinning Hip Hop/R&B and Reggae being in the small pond with big fish trying to make some type of mark with my craft.
WWD: What were the first records you can remember being into, the ones that really made an impression on you?
Well when I first got into House Music, the one and only record that really made a lasting impression til this day is The Todd Terry Project ‘Bango’. It was just pure, straight to the point and catchy which then made me a believer in opening my mind to the House Music genre!
WWD: You released your first EP close to 30 years ago… how have you maintained your passion for house music since then?
It’s never easy maintaining such a thing but for me it was and is easy because of the various emotions you feel when you produced. From start to finish, the whole process it takes once completed you feel a great deal of gratification and it’s your own.
WWD: Lots of those early records have massively stood the test of time and you can imagine them working on modern dancefloors for sure. Is longevity still something you think about when you’re making tracks now?
Oh yes, longevity is important to me because it’s really the best way to make your mark in any industry especially ours thus being considered iconic and the person behind that particular production.
WWD: How did you hook up with Doc Brown and Unlearn for the new EP?
I do my usual routine shopping tracks to various labels and Doc was one of the first to respond. What set him apart in making my decision to go with him was the respect he has for me as a producer, the respect I have for him and his label, and finally his persistence hahaha.
WWD: ‘Your Luvin My Luvin’ seems to blend your past with your present really effectively, what has changed about the way you produce music since you started doing it?
The pandemic was the contributing factor that hey I have to reinvent myself otherwise I’d be labeled as a J.A.G. (Just Another Guy). Since we couldn’t go anywhere and do anything, From 2020 and presently I watch tutorials just about every day in addition to doing Facetime sessions and learning from the new generation of producers how they go about creating their music thus implementing my way therefore calling it my own.
WWD: When you’re not working on your music, how do you like to spend your time?
I’m a big sports fanatic between my love for the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees and other teams I support in other sports, I can talk and watch sports all day to anyone who’s into it like I am.
WWD: What else do you have coming up this year we should be looking out for?
I have the ‘Clap Your Hands EP’ coming out on Moiss Black Music October 28th and then my final project of 2022 which is a collaboration with Colombia’s Allen Wish called ‘This Freak’ out on November 25th. I’m really excited about both projects.
WWD: Finally, for you, which new artist have you discovered this year that’s really blown you away?
Well, earlier this year I discovered a very amazing promising artist as well as DJ/Producer/Entrepreneur from South Africa and her name is Rishi Love. She’s a force to be reckoned with her vast knowledge and what I think is superior talents. Come 2023, she’ll be the one that rises above the rest as far as female artists and I’ll be endorsing and supporting her every step of the way.
