French-born Amsterdam-based electronic duo Parallelle have announced a ground-breaking project titled ‘A Day In’. The project will break new ground in the electronic music scene and highlight music creation’s cultural aspect.
The ‘A Day In’ series kicked off on the 27th of April and featured electronic music infused with cultural sounds and field recordings from different countries. The project aims to preserve ancient learnings and cultural heritage for the future while shedding light on foreign cultures, communities, ethnicities, instruments, and rhythms. In total, there is 11 short videos, and some are accompanied by a musical release on their label, Klassified. The first 2 track release ‘Essaouira’ was released on the 5th May.
We had the chance to talk with the duo about the project. Enjoy!
WWD: Hello Parallelle, and thanks for taking the time to chat to us. How has 2023 been for you so far? Any highlights?
So far, so good! It started in style in Costa Rica with an amazing count down set at Labrinto festival, surrounded by our best friends. We had January and February off to have some studio time and just came back from a nice US tour in March. And now full focus on A Day In Series
WWD: Congratulations on your new project ‘A Day In – By Parallelle’. Please can you give us a bit of history about the project? Do you have any goals you would like to achieve within the project?
It started with our first album A Day At where we translate working places into pieces of music. And since our music is heavily influenced by world culture it led us to push the project further to “A Day In”. Through this, we immerse in diverse cultures around the world, capture sound from their day-to-day life and unfold their story musically. This project has many facettes. The first one is an album and a concert. Second one is to show adoration for cultures that are sadly becoming uniform. And finally to increase the sense of hearing and harmony around us.
WWD: How is it different from other projects you were working on in the past?
This one has a deeper meaning, because first of all it has been three years since we actively worked on it. From exploring, to recording, to then cleaning the samples in the studio to then the creative composition of a song for the video, then one song for the dancefloor and finishing with a more accessible song for the album. It is indeed a lot of effort that makes it so special.
WWD: How is everything going with “Klassified Records”? Do you have some special criteria to tracks releasing on your label?
Klassified is back on heavy duties! We’ve kept it pretty classified the past 3 years during the pandemic, shaping the vision even more and releasing mainly conceptual albums. We are now releasing almost every month. Mostly friends of the label, so get your seatbelt on cause it’s going to get groovy.
WWD: Which releases do you have lined up that you can share?
We will have of course all the “A Day In” from us Parallelle. The new recruit is incredible, she is called Joiah, and we are releasing her debut EP on Klassified Records. We have an EP from Vander who is going to shake the dancefloors, a Single from Fulltone and ourselves, and EPs from the residents planned for this year too.
WWD: How does your touring schedule look like these days? Are there any shows coming up this year you are excited about that you can tell us?
We just got back from a North America Tour, and now summer starts, it is going to get busy in Europe. We have a couple of shows in Ibiza at Pacha and Cova Santa. We are going back to Japan in May with an exciting show with Bump in Tokyo. A super festival in the Netherlands called Wildeburg, Voodoo in Belgium, Echoes of Agartha in Cappadocia and many more. We will announce the full schedule soon.
WWD: What are your passions outside of music, and do you think these things inform your musical direction in any way?
We have so many passions, we are too curious and sometimes wish we’d had days of 48 hours. But writing, reading, traveling, hiking, fashion, sports, immersive events with friends and the list goes on. Of course all of that has a positive impact on inspiration, creativity and productivity.
WWD: To round off, is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?
Remember we are born to learn, to bond, and to play.
