Family Piknik is a 360° brand including events, music label, management, publishing, & bookings. Founded in 2012 by French DJ Tom Pooks, it has blossomed into a whole family of underground artists and unforgettable moments.
To celebrate the collective’s 80th release, ‘Casa De Flamingos V,’ we caught up with the A&R Manager, Ludovic Rambaud, to discuss his favourite releases, first ever ADE, and what makes Family Piknik unique. Enjoy!
WWD: Congratulations on Family Piknik Music’s 80th release! How does it feel to reach this milestone?
Well, it feels great ! Since the beginning, we’ve never meant to have a quantitative approach with Family Piknik Music. We’ve always limited the amount of releases rather than making too much volume, so the artists we have on board get the best satisfaction possible. So making it to the 80th release shows that we’ve kept on releasing good music since 2018 I guess…
WWD: Can you tell us more about the ethos and vision of Family Piknik Music? What sets it apart from other labels?
First of all, it’s not that common that a music label depends on a music festival like we do. Our intention is to release good music, whatever the musical genre and no matter how much popular is the producer. That’s the difference with most of the other labels I think, we don’t look at Spotify figures, nor Instagram followers, to make our artistic choices.
WWD: The 80th release is a compilation album featuring a diverse range of genres. What was the process behind selecting the tracks for this compilation?
We’ve received tons of demos and unsigned gems these past twelve months so we regularly stock these in a folder and we wait for the right timing to let them out. We’ve started the Casa de Flamingos compilation series in 2019 and we love it because it’s a multi-artists process. As we get more and more good music, but sometimes it’s not music for one single release, so we prefer creating a V/A with multi-genres inside.
WWD: You’ve mentioned the importance of new talents in the press release. How do you discover and nurture emerging artists?
We’re lucky enough to receive more and more incoming demos from all around the world. We’re often surprised by the quality and level production of these producers. When we see then that they come from small countries, have no background nor any active community, we feel excited to endorse them and give them a chance. We have a strong community and exposure through our brand, so we want to have these newcomers under our spotlight, that’s what we do !
WWD: The compilation features artists from various parts of the world, including Eastern Europe, Turkey, Argentina, the Middle East, and France. How do you maintain such a global perspective in your label’s roster?
Indeed, we are an international brand and we catch the attention from all around the globe. We are not looking at any specific countries, to be honest, most of the time, we just find out where these producers are from when we ask them to sign the agreement. But we’ve signed artists from Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Turkey, Argentina, Israel, USA, UK, Brazil, Lithuania… Of course, we also have a family of French artist gravitating around us, as we’re based in France. But our label is not a French Touch affair at all…
WWD: Why is it important for Family Piknik Music to prioritize music quality over marketing aspects when signing new tracks?
We’re fed up with the way labels and music have evolved through streaming algos/playlists and this overall culture of statistics over vibes and art. We know how this industry works but we don’t want to make the game of these big platforms capitalizing over music produced by small composers. We do marketing, at our level, because we need to, but music label is about music. It should be the only motivation. It’s so hard to gain profits from music with streaming that music composers deserve respect and consideration.
WWD: How has the sound of Family Piknik Music evolved since its inception?
We’ve always tried to have our music label matching with our festival’s artistic direction. Open-minded, not bound to one genre but more a kind of tastemaker label. That’s why we’ve not entered one musical genre and we prefer to sign electronic music within a large spectrum of atmospheres, may it be Indie Dance, Deep-House, Ethnic, Progressive, Melodic Techno or even Acid-Techno…
WWD: Can you share some of your favorite releases from the back catalogue and why they stand out to you?
When we look at our music catalogue, we’re happy to see the remixers we’ve manage to have on board with us : Hernan Cattaneo, John Digweed, Booka Shade, Marc Romboy, Kolombo, Cioz, Popof… It gives another dimension to our label and it validates our A&R hard work to find a balance between all these new names we sign and the great remixers we collab with.
WWD: How do Family Piknik events and the associated agency contribute to the label’s success and growth?
We believe in the 360 approach in music. Producing our own events allow us to give exposure to the signed artists of our music label. It also allows us to create a dynamic all year long around our events and artists. We also run a booking agency, so we cover all aspects and we cherish even more our artists.
WWD: Can you share some memorable moments from past Family Piknik events that have impacted the label?
Seeing headliners like Carl Cox, Fisher and Solomun dropping music we release on our label is always a great satisfaction. We combine our bookings with our music promo and it’s a good way to stay relevant. There is so much concurrence in the music industry that it’s an advantage for us to be known both as a music label than as a music festival.
WWD: What are your goals and plans for Family Piknik Music moving forward?
Now we can proudly share the news that we’ll host our first ever label showcase during next ADE. It will take place in Amsterdam’s Boom Chicago on thursday 17th of October. It’s a big step for us.
WWD: Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you are particularly excited about?
We’re excited each time we sign a new talent for who we know we’ll be a push. Early 2025, we’ll share music of a newcomer based in Hong Kong and we’ve been hit by the quality of his music. But we could mention many other releases we have on the pipeline. Our schedule is already complete for the 10 next months…
WWD: How do you see the label adapting to the ever-changing music industry landscape in the future?
We prefer keeping things simple and focus on what we’ve explained earlier, good music before strategy.
WWD: Can you give some advice to aspiring artists looking to get signed by Family Piknik Music?
Don’t be shy and don’t think we’re a random label ignoring your talent. Feel free to share and submit your music with us, we’ve always sent feedback. Also, we’ve started making session with Aulart a few months ago, we’ll run a new one in October, so you can join us anytime !
WWD: Where can fans find and support the 80th release compilation and stay updated with the label’s activities?
We’re distributed on all music platforms and you can get updated from our social networks. We also have a specific website for our music activities. Hope you’ll enjoy our music, thanks for the interview!
WWD: Our pleasure! Congrats and to 80 more!
