Madrid-based producer, DJ GAZZI, reveals his stunning new EP ‘Tus Ojos’ (meaning ‘Your Eyes’), out on 7th February via Parisian label Ano Ano.
GAZZI, the musical alias of Pablo Jiménez, proudly hails from Linares, Jaén in the historical community of Andalusia near Spain. Saying that, his sound would make you think he was a regular at FWD night in London. Heavily influenced by the founders of that sound, the likes of Burial, Four Tet et al. His music blends post-dubstep, UK bass, deep house, and breakbeat. Now based in Madrid, GAZZI has performed at top venues like Nitsa and festivals such as Sonár and Primavera Sound, where in 2022 he performed his first ever Boiler Room set.
Each of the five tracks here evoke GAZZI’s distinctly floaty, gentle and melodic house and techno sound. Complete with breathy melancholic vocal phrases, bubbling raw synths and sharp, swinging drums, it’s an essential release for fans of Four Tet, Floating Points or Overmono.
If you’re not yet aware of the rising, rousing sound of GAZZI, the ‘Tus Ojos’ EP is a fine place to start. Be aware, though – this will not be the last you hear from this talented Andalusian artist.
As usual, with our finger on the pulse of the hottest new talent, we sat down with the rising Spanish star for a chat. Here’s how it went down…
WWD: Hey GAZZI, great to meet you! What’s happening in your world at the moment?
Hi, I am currently going through some changes in my private life and so with my music also, this year will be a year full of music!
WWD: Congrats on dropping the ‘Tus Ojos’ EP on Ano Ano! Can you talk us through the release?
I met these guys in Wakana festival, two french twins, very nice people, they trusted my project and now we are here, releasing my first ever solo vinyl 🙂
WWD: How did the collaboration with the label come about?
As I said, they asked me for some demos, I sent it and they gave me the ok, everything was organic.
WWD: For those who are just discovering your music, what do you hope they feel when they listen?
Beautiful and inspiring music, music for sunny days!
WWD: Can you describe the connection between your music and your Spanish roots, and how they influence you today?
The truth is that although I love traditional Andalusian music, my music has nothing to do with it. I always was looking at the UK electronic music scene, they inspire me so much.
WWD: How is the scene in Madrid atm?
It is growing, many good collectives are keeping the underground scene in very good health, good djs, good parties…we only need the rest of Europe to pay attention on us.
WWD: As someone deeply involved in the electronic music scene, how do you see it right now?
It’s changing. I think that the figure of the DJ has changed, as they’re becoming more like an influencer and less as a selector, which makes me sad.
WWD: What’s been the highlight of your career so far? Any particular moment that stands out?
Going to Magnetic Fields in India and meeting Aphex Twin in Lisbon for sure!
WWD: Can you share some insight into your creative process? Any rituals or methods that keep you inspired?
I just open Ableton and see what happens next 🙂
WWD: Please share with us your top dancefloor fillers?
WWD: Finally, what does 2025 hold for you?
A lot of ambient music, trip hop, and less clubby music, more emotional though.
WWD: Amazing! Thanks for the chat 🙂
