Paul Jennings is part of a new breed of young producers that the future should be very excited for. At a mere 17 years old he is barely even old enough to get into the clubs playing the music he loves. But this hasn’t stopped the young Dubliner from developing a keen ear for good quality production. Paul is due to release his very first EP on the French Label Neverending Records, headed up by Citizen Kain, Phuture Traxx and Meda.
After becoming bored with what he was hearing around him he decided to give production a go. Just under 3 years later and “Serkis” is the result so far. This 4 track EP, which is due out on a digital release only on the 22nd of June shows great potential from the young producer. Each of the tracks feel like the tip of the iceberg. You get the feeling like the tracks can go deeper and darker, which could be a sign of things yet to come from the producer. That’s not to say that they don’t pack a significant punch as they are. But this being Paul’s first release shows great natural ability and raw talent, the rest will come with time.
The standout tracks on the release for me are “In search of it” and title track “Serkis”. Both are very bass heavy productions. The first of which featuring a brilliant incomprehensible vocal sample that is quite reminiscent of some of Dusky’s earlier work. The third track on the EP entitled “Movement” is a more melodic synth driven track. With a wonderfully active melody it is the most up beat track on the record, slightly rough around the edges but shows great potential. The closing track on the record was actually inspired by Harry Potter of all things. Starting off with a haunting vocal sample that creates a dark and exciting gateway for the rest of the record to finish out through. For a first release this is a very promising start and Paul is someone we will be keeping an eye on.
