Bristol’s Crackazat opens the remix chapter of Christian Prommer’s ‘Rhythmique Nocturne’ with a rework that sinks straight into the deep end. Taking on ‘Tryin’ Times’, the album’s decade-in-the-making reimagining of Roberta Flack’s 1969 protest-soul classic, he reshapes it into a late-night, jazz-inflected deep house weapon. Rolling grooves, dusty piano loops and warm analog subs carry the track, while the vocals drift through the mix to add atmosphere rather than command it. There is a hypnotic pull from start to finish, echoing the peak-hour energy of a New York jazz club dancefloor, and the outcome is a deeply effective club cut.
The source material runs deep. Prommer loops, fragments and deconstructs the original recording, amplifying its message into a dark yet urgent call for unity in a fractured world. Justine Hoerwarth recreates the original vocal style, Berlin-based Mosés Yoofee adds harmonic fire on additional piano, and Prommer’s snare fills are played on the very first snare drum he ever touched as a child in Styria. Crackazat channels all of that history into a swirling anthem where memory, politics and the dancefloor collide.
The remix arrives via Compost Records, the long-running Munich institution founded by Michael Reinboth that has spent more than three decades bridging jazz, soul, broken beat and club music across 800-plus releases. It is a fitting home for this collaboration: Christian Prommer helped define the label’s early sound as a founding member of Fauna Flash and Trüby Trio, the Munich drummer, producer and bandleader who has built a career dissolving the borders between acoustic jazz, deep electronics and club culture. Crackazat, meanwhile, has grown out of Bristol into one of house music’s most musical voices, threading a live jazz sensibility and rich chords through everything he produces. Together they turn a soul standard into something built for the small hours.
